Rok v… (série Host) — obálka

Main idea: Large wordless board books: twelve months, lots of characters to find — they support noticing and patience.

Host’s Rok v… (A Year in…) series are large wordless board books: twelve spreads, one month each, lots of characters and details to find. At home we have A Year in the Forest, A Year at Kindergarten, A Year in Fairyland and A Year in the Forest: Little Ones.

A Year in the Forest is a book you slow down for. Each month a different forest and lots of animals — it supports noticing and patience, exactly the educational reach I love.

In A Year at Kindergarten we follow kindergarten life from September to summer. Micka the cat keeps hiding and the kids love finding her.

A Year in Fairyland is a forest full of fairy-tale characters — the witch, the water goblin, Little Red Riding Hood and more, all year round.

Little Ones is the toddler version: sturdy pages and tiny creatures. A lovely bridge to the big A Year in the Forest.

The series also includes A Year in the Countryside, A Year at the Market, A Year on the Building Site and A Year in the Mountains.

Activity tip: With the kids we picked one month and looked for three animals — then tried spotting them in a real wood (or park).

A little more about the book

Emilia Dziubak’s A Year in the Forest tells its stories mainly through pictures. Finding the same animals again reveals their habits, care for their young and who sleeps by day or through winter.

Twelve illustrated spreads follow nursery life from September to the summer holidays. Recurring children and other characters invite readers to spot details and tell stories of their own.

The smallest forest inhabitants take centre stage in this board book: butterflies, worms, beetles and other tiny creatures. Lift-the-flap windows hide more surprises; the publisher recommends it from age two.
